Double or Nothing
Been listening to Double or Nothing over the past few days. If you are not familiar with this book its a must read if you are a fan of Las Vegas. Written by Tom Breitling and Cal Fussman its the story of Tom and Tim poster and how they took over the Golden Nugget on Fremont Street. Tom discusses how players took millions and how players lost millions. One of the Best parts of the book is the stories about gamblers, such as “Mr. Royalty” and his game of craps. The book goes into detail as to what a player and dealer may be thinking as well as odds on games like, craps, black jack, and so on. The best part is its an easy read and doesn’t go so in depth on odds and play that you miss the message of the book.
The Hold.
I was reading an article the other day on the difference between casinos in Las Vegas and your local Indian casino. I dont remember where the article was so I apologize in advance that I cant provide a link but similarinformation also shows up in the book “Winner Takes All”. In the past few years the Hold on Las Vegas slot machines has been at an average of 2-4% meaning that 2-4% of each dollar you put into the machine stays with the casino. That said the local Indian casino down the street from your house can have holds up to 20%. I can only think that this is a result of less competition around the Indian casinos, they have to hold more of your money in order to make money for new development. Where as casinos in Las Vegas have a lot of competition.
Why would they do this?
Whats wrong with this picture?
May be I am the only one to notice but, this picture taken in jan 2010 shows many things that are no longer there…What you ask? Look at the Mirage sign, or Caesars Palace. This happens all the time and it bugs me that advertisement firms cant get current photos of Las Vegas, or when looking at photos of rooms they show views of the strip that are just not possible from that hotel!
Bulldozed
Crazy Betters! Tonight went to a local casino with some good friends, and the table was doing really well until a cooler came up to the table. Things were on the up and up people were all winning, hard six here pass line 7 winner there… This guy was one of those system guys. You know, you always have to look at the dice never talk when the “dice are out” only bet on the Third roll of the dice unless 3 crap numbers like 2,3,12 come up. Well this guy comes out of no where and tells us this and then people start to believe this guy until the whole table starts to lose. Next thing you know he has the dice and and kills the table. Now lets take a logical approach to this guy. I am going to start by telling you all the secrete to Craps, the secrete that the casino doesn’t want you to know…Ready??? THE DICE HAVE NO MEMORY! This guy seems to think that the first roll ( the come out roll) dictates the rest of the rolls for that shooters turn.
A few words on craps before I go on.
Craps is played with 2 dice, and each die has 6 sides, there are 36 possible outcomes for one throw. now craps is concerned with the sum of the two numbers and these are not equally distributed.12 can come up only one way, 2 can come up only one way. three and eleven can each come up two ways, and seven can come up 6 ways. That said the first roll had nothing to do with the second and third roll. According to Wizardofodds.com the longer you play the more likely you are to hit on a winning or losing streak. For our purpose a mathematical streak of good play at craps will be 6 winning point bets. This said we didn’t see any point no matter what “system” you play. So this guy had no idea what he was saying… Anyone who goes into a casino with the though they will win big doesn’t know what all the logical people know, Wynn said it best ” the only way to win money in a casino is to own one”. The most money lost in a Wynn casino by a single person, according to one interview with Charlie Rose was $17,000,000 over 3 years, Talk about a streak.
The point is to have fun and if you make money good for you and if you don’t well to bad. Although I don’t believe in a cooler or dice hitting a persons hand changing the table, I do believe there are bad betting systems. Just watch next time you are at a table they suck the energy out of the group make it more of a job then a game and make the night no fun.

Robert “Bob” Maheu
Found an interview on KNPR.com with Bob Maheu, you may ask who is Bob Maheu? well he is the guy who was Howard Hughes face, the person who conducted his business when he was purchasing hotels on the Las Vegas strip.
Rush On Wynn.
I am not a big fan of Rush myself but I do listen if someone of importance from Las Vegas, or a Las Vegas topic is on. Feb. 26 2010 Rush discussed Steve Wynn’s conference call about 4th quarter earnings. Watch and Listen I think Wynn is right. Wynn definitely has a good sense of how the business and political world works. Some background on Wynn, According to the book “Winner Take All” Wynn has been known to donate money to both the Democrats and Republicans, so depending on what he feels is right he goes with it. I think this is whats missing in America we are too stubborn and only stay with one political party all the time no matter what. There is nothing wrong with reading the facts and then picking the side to be with. In this case I think Wynn is spot on. What do you think?
